Location

Portsdown Hill's white chalkpit and surrounding grassland and scrub overlook Portsmouth city and Harbour, from where it is clearly visible. It forms a distinct boundary between the northern outskirts of Portsmouth and Fareham, and rural South-east Hampshire to its north. It is a ridge of chalk, about 9km long from East to West.

This website concentrates on the Portsmouth City Council-managed SSSI and other open space which occupies the central southern area. Farmland covers much of the northern slope, while Defence Research Establishments, Victorian Fortifications, reservoirs and general urbanisation take up most of the rest.

The maps below show the extent of the SSSI and major landmarks.

The hill is long and narrow, so the map has been split to show it without scrolling. The roundabout at the main view point is shown twice:

Aerial View

An aerial view of the hill can be seen using satellite images from LocalLive. Visit Local Live aerial view of Portsdown Hill, then explore the hill from the comfort of your home - before visiting the real site. The scale can be changed and you can move around the area. Clearly, the site had far more scrub at the time of these photographs being taken a few years ago: and sometimes, the scrub level varies depending on the scale of the photograph being viewed!
